#26 – Conducting A New Leader Assimilation (New Manager Quick Start Tool 6 of 9 w/ FREEBIE)

As part of the New Manager Quick Start, the NLA should be mandatory for every newly appointed leader in your organization because it is so powerful. You won’t regret doing it!

What is a New Leader Assimilation or NLA?

When a new leader starts, the team (s)he inherits is going through a change.

The NLA is a meeting with the new leader, an impartial facilitator (HR, OD or consultant), and team members.

Instead of team members having concerns or questions unanswered in their mind, this meeting gives them a chance to voice them, but in a safe setting, while getting to know the new leader and each other

The goal is to improve effectiveness and decrease cycle time for the new leader and team to “get up to speed” by getting acquainted with the new leader’s background, style and operating preferences

The new leader can gain insight into team members’ concerns about the organization and/or the leader

We’ll discuss how to prepare for it and what to cover during the session.

The Myers Brigs Type Indicator or MBTI can also be used with the NLA or as a separate team meeting, so we’ll briefly cover that and then go into more detail over the next several podcasts. Click here to order your MBTI report

Enter your name and e-mail below to get the FREE PowerPoint deck template to help you plan and kick off your NLA.

#25 – Role Transition Checklist (New Manager Quick Start Tool 5 of 9 w/ FREEBIE)

Employees change jobs/positions every few years, and yet we always seem to be caught off guard or ill-prepared when the new person starts.

What if the person leaving the role (the “incumbent”) captured all the main things that were part of the job BEFORE they left?

Ideally, they could train the new hire, but even if they’re long gone before the new person starts, the FREEBIE discussed in today’s podcast will ensure the information lives on.

Enter your name and e-mail below for the FREEBIE – Role Transition Checklist.

#23 – Create “My Style: A Guide to Working with Me” (New Manager Quick Start Tool 3 of 9 w/ FREEBIE)

You know the drill, you get assigned to a new project or a new team and immediately begin to work withother people.

Soon, you find that one team member can’t stop talking while another is silent.

During a presentation, one only wants to hear what’s proven to have worked in the past, while anotherkeeps brainstorming what could be in the future.

When working the project plan, one wants to start early and have the detailed plan broken down by step#89.3 by July 5th at 2pm and another wants to wait to plan as they do their best work right before the deadline.

Based on their actions, you then tell yourself stories for what it means when they only respond to your long e-mail with an emoji, or why they seem to enjoy asking a million questions and critiquing your proposals.

How much time do you waste, and stress or frustration do you feel by waiting to understand how to best work with them?

I recently had an insight when I bought a new appliance. With my new purchase, I got a user’s manuals to learn how to work with it. If I thought this gadget was complicated, how much more are people!

Then it hit me…what if I had a user’s manual or a guide that gave me immediate insights into the people I work with?

Instead of spending weeks or months figuring out what motivates them, their communication style, or how they make decisions, what if we had the conversation up-front?

As we continue the New Manager Quick Start podcast series, episode #23 covers how to create a user’s guide to help others who are beginning to work with you.

You can share it to spark a conversation about how you like to work and more importantly, to ask about their preferences and style. Save time and stress later by having the conversation now.
